Wrapped up warm on a crisp, icy cold Saturday night in the dead of winter, we walk through one of Tokyo’s largest late-night entertainment districts. Exhalations and ventilation shafts are steaming. A bustling, loud, unforgiving, smelly (though more so in the summer months) hive of activity, the place attracts both Tokyoites and hedonistic tourists from around the globe on the lookout for kicks.

A pushy pusher; salarymen venting frustrations with all-night baseball batting practice; J-pop, street food carts, host clubs, girls bars and a stream of taxis. In the foyer of a ‘Men’s Hyper Entertainment Center’ - essentially a brightly-lit pornographic movie rental hotel, hourly rates are offered in private booths.
