about

Pieces for solo instruments in ‘unmeasured’, or non-metrical notation date back to at least 16th century Europe. In 17th century France, however, the unmeasured prelude became popular amongst composers for the keyboard (such as Louis Couperin, d’Anglebert, and Rameau).

When playing those short works - which use a beautifully free form of notation indicating pitches, rough temporal proportions, and lush ornamentations - you feel like you’re almost channeling those composers. They feel like pieces that are built around idiomacy, and the visceral, haptic experience of a particular pair of hands.

The pieces on this EP all try to get close to that sort of possessed freedom. The Harpsichord works (played by Satoko Doi-Luck), are written in Baroque notation, and flirt sincerely with pastiche. The others, perhaps less so.
